A big week for Cliff Lee (11IP, 2W, ER, 13K) puts Jim Kushner over the top with five points, while last week’s 1-2 of Rob LaColla and Mark Watzke slide down to 2-3. Lee’s one-third inning edge in NL IP gives Kushner a one-point bump while thirteen other entrants with Clayton Kershaw lose one.

Props to Mike Levine for two nifty picks that paid off this week: Joey Votto for NL R and James Shields for AL IP. More props to Mike Trout, whose hot play of late might make some of the pool’s 34 Trout picks into winners down the road.

Rob LaColla reclaims the lead with a season-high 5.13 fueled by Miguel Cabrera’s big week (.440, 4HR, 8RBI, 6R) and yet another strong start by Clayton Kershaw (W, 9IP, ER, 5K). Mark Watzke and Jon Pauley make their top three debuts with respective scores of 5.09 and 4.16.

Amy Gill joins John Agnello (Rivera S) as this week’s only “unique pick” owners with her choice of Miguel Cabrera for AL runs. Cabrera is just one HR short of leading in four of our AL batting categories.

Dan McCloskey moves into the lead after a week containing two stellar starts apiece by Clayton Kershaw (15.2IP, ER, 15K) and Felix Hernández (14IP, 2ER, 13K). Will Rice repeats in second place and Brian Wells jumps nine spots to third.

Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan has a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow, and becomes the third pitcher chosen by our entrants this year to require season-ending surgery. The pool now has twelve players on the DL, accounting for a total of 54 picks.

Big thanks to everyone for settling your entry fees quickly. We are officially all paid and the $420 prize is complete! Rob LaColla takes the top spot in our second update, with Will Rice and Jim Kushner trailing only in the HBP column. The majority of our entrants received bumps this week from Miguel Cabrera’s BA lead and/or Justin Verlander’s Astro-aided 1.55 ERA. Shout out to Joe Maissel for his prescient Carlos Gómez pick for NL BA!

Two unfortunate injuries merit mentioning: Cardinals closer Jason Motte and White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd both required season-ending ligament replacement surgeries this week. Eight other players chosen by our entrants are temporary residents of the DL.

For those of you keeping score at home, please correct the grid we sent out at the beginning of the season to show Mark Watzke’s NL R pick as Ryan Braun. Sorry about that! Oh, and if your name appears in red below, you haven’t paid your $20 entry fee…

Happy to bring you the first pool update of the 2013 MLB season! Karen McCloskey is off to a strong start, leading both in points and HBP. Rob LaColla trails by just 2 beanballs, and Jim Kushner holds third place thanks to his prized Yu Darvish K pick.

Equally as noteworthy (at least to us geeks) is John Agnello’s fourth place portfolio, which features two “unique picks.” John was the only entrant to select Mariano Rivera and Matt Harvey, who currently lead in AL S and NL W, respectively. When one door closes, another opens…

If your name appears in red below, you haven’t paid your $20 entry fee to Dan or Jud. Unpaid entrants will still be listed in future updates, but their scores will not appear until their fee is paid. No hard feelings, but let’s settle up now so we can enjoy the rest of the baseball season without any worries.
