October 1, 2013 FINAL UPDATE

The results are in… Karen McCloskey is our 2013 MLB Predictions Pool winner! She is our ninth new champ in our contest’s nine-year existence; Karen also held or shared the lead in each of our September updates. Congratulations!

Here are the season category leaders, with bold indicating players we actually chose:
AL BA: Miguel Cabrera (8 entrants)
ALHR: Chris Davis
ALRBI: Chris Davis
AL R: Mike Trout (14)
ALSB: Jacoby Ellsbury
NL BA: Michael Cuddyer
NL HR: Pedro Alvarez, Paul Goldschmidt
NL RBI: Paul Goldschmidt
NL R: Matt Carpenter
NL SB: Eric Young Jr.

AL IP: James Shields (1)
AL W: Max Scherzer
AL ERA: Aníbal Sánchez
ALSO: Yu Darvish (2)
AL S: Jim Johnson (5)
NL IP: Adam Wainwright
NL W: Adam Wainwright, Jordan Zimmermann
NL ERA: Clayton Kershaw (12)
NL SO: Clayton Kershaw (12)
NL S: Craig Kimbrel (10)

ALHBP: Shane Victorino
NL HBP: Shin-Soo Choo
ALHBP: Justin Masterson (7)
NL HBP: Charlie Morton

Some pool tidbits:
- Our average score of 3.05 pts is our highest since 2010. Ten entrants predicted at least four categories correctly, compared to seven entrants in 2012 and only two in 2011.
- Our 2013 entrants averaged less than 30 HBP for the first time in Predictions Pool history, breaking a five-year streak of 40+ HBP.
- Mike Levine earns our only “unique pick” this year, as the only entrant to pick James Shields for AL IP. Mike was also the only person to pick September call-up Billy Hamilton for NL SB, who stole 13 bases in as many games for the Cincinnati Reds. Spread that over a full season and Hamilton’s 162 steals easily win the category.
- Karen is the first entrant since at least 2006 to lead in both our first and last official updates in a season.

We hope you had as much fun participating in this year’s pool as we did. Enjoy the playoffs, and congrats to Karen once more!

September 30, 2013

We’re ready to say with confidence that Karen is our winner this year, but it just doesn’t feel right to make it “official” with Game 163 still unplayed! Let’s wait until tomorrow for our final standings, some interesting pool facts, and a fond farewell to the MLB Predictions Pool for 2013…

September 28, 2013

Karen McCloskey maintains her lead with no real challengers in sight... Adam Wainwright has clinched the NL IP lead for the season, which eliminates those of us depending on a Kershaw point in that category.

We should be able make things official on Monday. Stay tuned!

September 24, 2013

Karen McCloskey stands alone atop the MLB Predictions Pool in our last week of regular season baseball. Two category races are likely to decide if she wins it all…

NL IP- Karen broke a tie for first with Dan last night thanks to Adam Wainwright’s seven-plus-inning disposal of the Nationals, which put the Cardinals’ ace 6 1/3 innings up on Clayton Kershaw. Will Kershaw go deep enough on Saturday night to reclaim the lead in NL IP? If so, will the NL Central division standings warrant another start for Wainwright on Sunday?

AL RBI- Miguel Cabrera leads the category by one RBI over Chris Davis with five games remaining for Detroitand six for the Orioles. Will a banged-up Cabrera keep grinding out starts for a Tiger team trying to clinch the AL Central?

Karen should maintain her lead until Clayton Kershaw’s start this Saturday—if the lefty pitches at least one out into the seventh, Dan and Karen move back into a tie for first (HBP remaining equal). If Kershaw leads NL IP and Miguel Cabrera loses the AL RBI title, then Jud Ehrbar leads by HBP tiebreaker. In the unlikely event that Mike Trout blows a five-run lead in AL R, Rob LaColla can win with a Kershaw IP title as well.

We’ll send another update before the weekend if anything changes!

September 18, 2013

Baseball fans:

Dan and Karen McCloskey remain knotted at the top with just twelve days left in the regular season. In fact, we see no movement whatsoever in the standings with only a handful of entrants making minute improvements in the HBP column.

Let’s look at some season stretch scenarios…
AL Batting- With BA (Mi.Cabrera), HR (Davis), and SB (Ellsbury) essentially wrapped up for the season, the Miggy/Crush RBI battle holds top billing. If Cabrera doesn’t maintain his 2 RBI margin over Chris Davis, we have eight entrants tied in points and Jud Ehrbar leads by tiebreaker. Mike Trout seems likely to keep AL runs, otherwise Rob LaColla picks up a point on our leaders.
NL Batting- Andrew McCutchen added six points to his BA over the last twelve games; an unlikely encore of this performance could earn him a batting title and net Steve Craig $400. As mentioned in last week’s update, Karen gains a point if Jay Bruce picks up three HR on the current NL co-leaders.
AL Pitching- Not much up for grabs here, especially after Jim Johnson’s three saves in four games for the Orioles. Dan’s petition to reverse last week’s application of official scoring rule 10.17(c) on Mariano Rivera is still pending…
NL Pitching- Although tonight’s scheduled start for Clayton Kershaw has been moved to Saturday, it appears that the L.A. lefty and current NL IP runner-up Adam Wainwright will each start two more games before the season’s end. While Karen (and Steve Craig) gain a point on the competition if Wainwright passes Kershaw in IP, our remaining NL pitching categories are unlikely to change.
HBP- Dan has a head-to-head advantage down the stretch over Karen, with his active Fielder & Cueto combo to her Cain. Dan and Karen, each currently with 34 HBP, exceed all entrants in our top ten except seventh-place Jud (44) and eighth-place Will Rice (34).

We’ll be sending out updates when anything changes in our standings from now on. Good luck to all!

September 11, 2013

Karen and Dan McCloskey continue their September domination of the 2013 MLB Predictions pool, with Steve Craig and Rob LaColla still tied for third. Although the @PredictionsPool Twitter timeline reveals three lead changes in the last eight days, this week’s update is a virtual carbon copy of the last.

Andrew McCutchen is making a late run at the NL batting title, trailing leader Chris Johnson by just four points. McCutchen’s lead would put Steve Craig alone in first with seven points and return Will Rice to the top five. The NL home run race is also worth watching: Cincinnati’s Jay Bruce is three belts from giving our current co-leader Karen some separation at the top.

Enjoy the home stretch!

September 3, 2013

Super Bowl XLVII is remembered by many as the Harbowl… could the 2013 MLB Predictions Pool become the McClassic? Co-leaders Karen and Dan McCloskey beat out our four other six-point entrants thanks to their gaudy HBP totals of 34 apiece. This week’s update features our highest point average of the year (4.33), with nearly half the pool boasting at least five correct picks.

Last season’s September 3rd update contains a relevant tidbit: “…no entrant leading the pool in the first September update has gone on to win since Sid Harris took our inaugural grand prize in 2006.” In fact, neither of last year’s eventual co-champs even cracked the top ten on 9/3/12.

Stay tuned!

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

August 28, 2013

Rob LaColla remains on top as our only entrant with six correct picks, trailed by the McCloskeys and Will Rice. Karen, Dan, and Will each hold comfortable HBP leads over our leader as well as the three entrants below them in the standings, which could be crucial down the September stretch.

Jean Segura finally passed the suspended Everth Cabrera in NL steals on Friday, docking a point from eleven entrants. In the AL, Joe Nathan and Mariano Rivera have trimmed Jim Johnson’s saves lead to two. In the last three weeks, Nathan has collected five saves while Johnson has only converted one of four save opportunities. Rivera’s struggles over this same interval almost resemble Johnson’s: three consecutive blown opportunities followed by three saves.

Next update will probably be Tuesday instead of Wednesday…

August 23, 2013

Our top three of Rob LaColla, Will Rice, and Mark Watzke remain the same, but places shuffle around in the middle third. Clayton Kershaw continues his mean streak in Miami(8IP, 5H, 0R, 6K) and pokes his head over Matt Harvey for first in NL strikeouts.

Back to our regular Wednesday update schedule next week…

Monday, August 19, 2013

August 19, 2013

Out of town this week so we’re doing a quick update today…

Rob’s back in sole possession of first with an update high for the year of 7-24. Will Rice and Mark Watzke trail with six points each, followed by a tie for fourth between CC/Zinta and Dan McCloskey. However, both CC/Z and Dan top Rob, Will, and Mark in HBP tiebreaker points with 31.

Our highest average score of the season is due in part to Clayton Kershaw’s domination of the Phils on Saturday (8IP, 3H, 0R, 8K), which scored NL IP and ERA points for the LA lefty. Our top starter for the AL couldn’t match Kershaw’s brilliance on Saturday: Felix Hernández stumbled in Arlington(5IP, 5IP, 5ER) costing the Mariner his ERA lead and dropping Will, Dan, and Amy Gill down one point in our standings.

Maybe we’ll send out another update on Friday if things get interesting. See ya!

-Dan and Jud

Wednesday, August 14, 2013

August 14, 2013

Will Rice is back on top this week with Rob LaColla trailing by just two HBPs. CC/Zinta and Dan McCloskey tie for third a full point behind Will and Rob, but maintain a sizable lead in the tiebreaker column.

Miguel Cabrera’s big week (7R, .379, 5HR, 11RBI) pushed Mike Trout out of a tie for ALruns, but still wasn’t enough to pass the O’s Chris Davis in RBI. Trout’s bounce brought two-thirds of our entrants down a point and took Dan out of a comfy seat in first place. Another Oriole could make the AL runs race interesting down the stretch: Adam Jones, uniquely picked by our current leader Will Rice, is just six runs behind Cabrera.

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

August 7, 2013

Dan McCloskey leads the MLB Predictions Pool this week with Will Rice, Rob LaColla, and Mark Watzke trailing by HBPs only. Dan earns his second lead of the year and breaks a nine-week streak of updates topped by Rob and/or Will.

Many of us picked up a fresh point this week when Mike Trout finally caught up with a banged-up Miguel Cabrera in the AL runs column. Trout trails considerably in stolen bases, but another less popular entrants’ pick could make a run at current leader Jacoby Ellsbury for the steals title: Toronto’s Rajai Davis (chosen by Will, CC/Zinta) trails by just six swipes and has fifteen July/August steals to Ellsbury’s eight.

As anticipated in our last update, current NL SB leader Everth Cabrera has been suspended for the remainder of the 2013 season. If and when Cabrera’s frozen total of 37 steals is eventually surpassed by the trailing active NLers (Starling Marte (32), Jean Segura (31), Carlos Gómez (29)), a majority of our entrants will lose a point they’ve counted on for the last twelve updates. If indeed Gómez manages a final lead in this category, entrants Steve Craig and Amy Gill will effectively gain two points on the Everth camp.

Happy August!

-Dan and Jud

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

July 31, 2013

Rob LaColla and Will Rice are knotted in a tie for first this week with Dan McCloskey close behind. Rob gained a point over the weekend during the Braves’ sweep of the Cardinals, which featured three consecutive saves by new NL leader Craig Kimbrel. Will maintained his share of the lead by collecting 3 HBPs to equal Rob’s total of 24.

Dan trails Rob and Will by one category point but leads both by three in the HBP tiebreaker. The apparently imminent MLB suspensions in the Biogenesis case could allow Dan to back into the lead if current NL SB leader Everth Cabrera is among the penalized players. If Cabrera’s six-bag lead indeed evaporates under a lengthy suspension our own leaderboard will transform as well—Will and Rob are among six of this week’s top ten entrants depending on the PED-linked Padre for a point. Dan and Karen McCloskey are among the four in our top ten that chose a “clean” alternative to Everth Cabrera.

Enjoy the rest of the MLB Trade Deadline afternoon!

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

July 24, 2013

Will Rice maintains the lead in our first post-All-Star break update, with Rob LaColla and Karen McCloskey still in second and third. It’s worth noting that the entrants ranked #3-7 this week (Karen, CC/Zinta, Amy Gill, Dan McCloskey, Joe Maissel) all own higher HBP totals than both Will and Rob.

Miguel Cabrera’s sore hip flexor doesn’t appear to be serious, although his short absence this week cost thirteen of our entrants an AL RBI point. The severity of Pirate closer Jason Grilli’s forearm injury is also unknown and may help clear a path for Atlanta’s Craig Kimbrel in the NL saves category. If the lead goes to Kimbrel (he now trails Grilli by two saves and Edward Mujica by one), then Rob picks up a point on Will and possibly regains the pool lead.

Click here for an MVP trivia question, and then post your score on our blog by clicking the “comments” link at the bottom of the July 24th post.

Did you like how I never mentioned Ryan Braun? Oops, I just did. Be sure to wish Alex Rodriguez a happy 38th birthday on Saturday!

July 15, 2013 (All-Star break)

Will Rice assumes the lead in our All-Star break update, snapping Rob LaColla’s five-week streak. Karen McCloskey sits in third behind Rob with Dan McCloskey and Jim Kushner rounding out the top five.

Will can thank Felix Hernández once again for his pool fortunes, although this week CC Sabathia didn’t play the IP spoiler. Felix went eight shutout innings against the Angels last night to pad his ERA lead while Sabathia spent the afternoon struggling with the Twins in the Bronx(4IP, 8H, 8R). Joe Nathan was tied for the AL saves lead in our last update, but three saves in four days by Jim Johnson sent Nathan back down in the standings.

Let’s take a look at some of our All-Star break leaders in past years along with their final standings: Steve Craig in 2012 (finished 9th), Dan McCloskey in 2011 (finished 3rd), David Jones and John Agnello in 2010 (finished 4th and 15th respectively), Jon Pauley and Tony Wight in 2009 (finished 2nd and 8threspectively), Will Rice in 2008 (finished 2nd), and Jud Ehrbar in 2007 (finished 2nd). In summary, an All-Star break lead does not necessarily translate into a title.

But what about Karen McCloskey? Karen has finished top three on three occasions this month and has HBP over all contenders at this point. Chris Davis would probably need to be abducted by aliens for her AL HR pick of Edwin Encarnación to catch up, but a similarly mysterious disappearance by NL SB leader Everth Cabrera coupled with second-half struggles for King Felix could provide a tiebreaking scenario for Karen.

Enjoy the festivities at Citi Field and we’ll check back in next Wednesday.

-Dan and Jud

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

July 10, 2013

Rob LaColla maintains the lead for a fifth straight week, leaving Will Rice and Karen McCloskey in second and third. Rob’s HBP total dictates that Will beats him outright in points, but Karen (second highest HBP in pool) can win by merely tying LaColla in picks.

Felix Hernández earned Will a precious AL ERA point after former leader and fellow Mariner Hisashi Iwakuma blew an early 5-1 lead against the Red Sox. However, Will’s hopes for a second King Felix conquest in AL IP were dashed by CC Sabathia’s complete game loss last night in the Bronx.

Our next update goes out on Monday due to All-Star festivities next week. See you then!

-Dan and Jud

Wednesday, July 3, 2013

July 3, 2013

The LaColla reign of terror continues as Rob bags his fourth straight update lead. Will Rice remains in second place with Mark Watzke in third by just 2 HBP. Rob led in the first July update last year as well, but failed to finish in the top five at the end of the season.

Last week we considered Will’s chances of capturing a lead, but what about Mr. Watzke? Mark can gain ground with Mike Trout in the AL runs category, or perhaps Joey Votto for the NL batting title. Jim Johnson slipping in the AL saves column would also help Mark’s case for first place.

Have a happy Fourth!!

June 26, 2013

Rob LaColla leads for the third update in a row, followed by Jim Kushner and Will Rice in a tie for second. According to the @PredictionsPool Twitter log, Rob has held the lead every day since Will spiked up to a 7-16 on June 16th.

Will’s best chance to catch Rob might be with Felix Hernández, who lost ground in the AL IP and ERA standings after a stinker in Anaheim on Thursday. King Felix (5IP, 12H, 6ER, 2K) blew a 7-0 lead against the Angels after a brutal five-run 5th featuring five singles and two home runs.

Hey folks! MLB Predictions Pool co-founder Dan McCloskey’s fantastic writing about baseball is showcased on the High Heat Stats site and on Dan’s Left Field blog. You can also hear Dan’s podcast debut with High Heat Stats here or on iTunes. Check it out!

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

June 19, 2013

Rob LaColla becomes our first leader to hold first in consecutive updates, with Jim Kushner and Karen McCloskey rounding out the top three. Rob has led in four updates this year, and is our only entrant with multiple first-place finishes. Will Rice hit seven points over the weekend but now sits in fourth place.

As is often the case, the carousel of pool leaders seems driven by the IP category in both leagues. The NL point shuttles between Clayton Kershaw (13 entrants) and Cliff Lee (current leader, Kushner only), with Adam Wainwright (no picks) in the mix as well. The AL IP pick usually belongs to Felix Hernández (4 entrants) with James Shields (current leader, Mike Levine only) occasionally on top. Is the lead in the MLB Predictions Pool dictated by pitching rotation spots, HBPs and freak injuries? Probably.

June 12, 2013

Rob LaColla sneaks ahead of Will Rice this week thanks to a pair of Dickey beanballs in Chicago. Mark Watzke sits in third with a 5-12, followed by a slew of entrants with four points.

Rob and Will become our first contestants to hit six points in an update this season, while the group averages above three points for the first time as well. Last year featured only one update leader with seven points: Aaron Smith on May 21st.

Wednesday, June 5, 2013

June 5, 2013

Will Rice assumes first place this week, with Dan McCloskey and Rob LaColla ahead in HBP but shy one point. Will and Dan made huge jumps in the standings thanks to a two-start update week by Felix Hernández (15.1IP, 14K).

While the scope of the Biogenesis PED investigation isn’t entirely clear, possible MLB suspensions to Ryan Braun or Everth Cabrera could impact the results of our pool this year. Braun was chosen for a total of 31 NL picks across seventeen entrants, and more than half of us chose the league-leading Cabrera for steals.

May 29, 2013

A big week for Cliff Lee (11IP, 2W, ER, 13K) puts Jim Kushner over the top with five points, while last week’s 1-2 of Rob LaColla and Mark Watzke slide down to 2-3. Lee’s one-third inning edge in NL IP gives Kushner a one-point bump while thirteen other entrants with Clayton Kershaw lose one.

Props to Mike Levine for two nifty picks that paid off this week: Joey Votto for NL R and James Shields for AL IP. More props to Mike Trout, whose hot play of late might make some of the pool’s 34 Trout picks into winners down the road.

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

May 22, 2013

Rob LaColla reclaims the lead with a season-high 5.13 fueled by Miguel Cabrera’s big week (.440, 4HR, 8RBI, 6R) and yet another strong start by Clayton Kershaw (W, 9IP, ER, 5K). Mark Watzke and Jon Pauley make their top three debuts with respective scores of 5.09 and 4.16.

Amy Gill joins John Agnello (Rivera S) as this week’s only “unique pick” owners with her choice of Miguel Cabrera for AL runs. Cabrera is just one HR short of leading in four of our AL batting categories.

May 15, 2013

Dan McCloskey moves into the lead after a week containing two stellar starts apiece by Clayton Kershaw (15.2IP, ER, 15K) and Felix Hernández (14IP, 2ER, 13K). Will Rice repeats in second place and Brian Wells jumps nine spots to third.

Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan has a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow, and becomes the third pitcher chosen by our entrants this year to require season-ending surgery. The pool now has twelve players on the DL, accounting for a total of 54 picks.

Big thanks to everyone for settling your entry fees quickly. We are officially all paid and the $420 prize is complete! May 8, 2013

Rob LaColla takes the top spot in our second update, with Will Rice and Jim Kushner trailing only in the HBP column. The majority of our entrants received bumps this week from Miguel Cabrera’s BA lead and/or Justin Verlander’s Astro-aided 1.55 ERA. Shout out to Joe Maissel for his prescient Carlos Gómez pick for NL BA!

Two unfortunate injuries merit mentioning: Cardinals closer Jason Motte and White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd both required season-ending ligament replacement surgeries this week. Eight other players chosen by our entrants are temporary residents of the DL.

For those of you keeping score at home, please correct the grid we sent out at the beginning of the season to show Mark Watzke’s NL R pick as Ryan Braun. Sorry about that! Oh, and if your name appears in red below, you haven’t paid your $20 entry fee…

May 1, 2013

Happy to bring you the first pool update of the 2013 MLB season! Karen McCloskey is off to a strong start, leading both in points and HBP. Rob LaColla trails by just 2 beanballs, and Jim Kushner holds third place thanks to his prized Yu Darvish K pick.

Equally as noteworthy (at least to us geeks) is John Agnello’s fourth place portfolio, which features two “unique picks.” John was the only entrant to select Mariano Rivera and Matt Harvey, who currently lead in AL S and NL W, respectively. When one door closes, another opens…

If your name appears in red below, you haven’t paid your $20 entry fee to Dan or Jud. Unpaid entrants will still be listed in future updates, but their scores will not appear until their fee is paid. No hard feelings, but let’s settle up now so we can enjoy the rest of the baseball season without any worries.

Pool invite and entry sheet

Greetings pool participants past, present, and future-

It's time to start making our picks for the 2013 MLB Predictions Pool!

Last year’s contest ended in a tie between Jeff Gatland (our eighth different winner in eight seasons) and Sid Harris (our first repeating champ). So anyone can win, and some can even win twice.

First, Jud will now be using his judehrbar@gmail.com address for all emails. If you send your picks to Jud’s old address, they will not be processed. Second, we will now accept PayPal for your $20 entry fee (payable to judehrbar@gmail.com). If your money transfer carries a fee, please choose to pay the fee as the sender. Of course, you can always mail cash or check to Dan or Jud (addresses in attached entry form).

The Word version of the entry form does a pretty good job of explaining the rules, but here's a refresher:

--You get credit for picking the league leader in a category only. If a player gets traded to the other league during the season, you're probably out of luck. For example, in 2008, CC Sabathia led the majors in innings pitched, but since he was traded from Cleveland to Milwaukee during the season, he led neither league. You'd get nothing for having picked Sabathia.
--Batting average and ERA leaders are subject to MLB's minimum requirements for qualification (3.1 plate appearances per game a player's team has played for batting average; 1 inning pitched per game a player's team has played for ERA).
--All entries must be e-mailed to Dan at dcmccloskey@yahoo.com or Jud at judehrbar@gmail.com by midnight (EST) of Friday, March 29. This is a firm deadline.
--$20 per person to enter.

We're still open to newcomers joining up. If you have anyone else you would like to invite, please request approval from either Dan or Jud. All new entrants are required to submit their $20 entry fee, in addition to their picks, by March 29. Returning entrants may pay Dan or Jud by April 30.

The 2013 MLB Predictions Pool blog is still at http://mlbpool.blogspot.com/, and Twitter is still @PredictionsPool.

Any questions, let us know. Hope you're in for another year.

Good luck,
Dan & Jud
